Without further ado, here are three tips to have a perfect summer internship:
#1 Ask Questions.
Internships are about learning, and nobody expects you to be an expert. Ask questions when you are confused. Ask questions to understand a topic better. Ask questions out of curiosity. Ask questions to clarify a task. Not only is there no such thing as a stupid question, but there’s no limit to the amount of questions you can ask. Remember: it’s always better to ask than to assume – asking questions shows initiative and assumptions can lead to errors. You want to learn as much as you can as well as you can. Each thing you learn during your internship is another thing to add to your resume, and another skill set to demonstrate in future interviews.
#2 Immerse Yourself.
On average, your internship will last three months. Make the most out of your time by diving deep into your specific duties and learn as much as you can about how your department fits into the overall company mission. An internship is your first taste of the working world that awaits post graduation. If your company pays for online learning courses like Lynda.com or Code School, take advantage of as many courses and tutorials as you can. Learn HTML or strengthen your design talent in your free time. Discover the world of SEO or take advantage of the firm’s fancy CAD software and familiarize yourself with the platform. This is the perfect time to build and develop your skills and knowledge.
#3 Say Yes & Take Initiative.
Being a “Yes Man” isn’t about fueling the echo chamber. Being a “Yes Man” is about being open to new opportunities. Say yes to joining the rest of your department for lunch. Join your team members on a weekend adventure. If you’re 21, say yes and join your team for happy hour. Saying yes to new opportunities will supercharge your networking abilities. You’ll develop stronger bonds with your coworkers, who will be more likely to give you glowing reviews in the future and even expose you to future opportunities. This is by far the most important of the three tips to have a perfect summer internship.
Whether you are a recent grad or still in school, we wish you the best of luck and hope our tips to have the perfect summer internship set you up for a future of success. Don’t forget to sign up and enter our contest to win three months of free housing!
